Ihlara Canyon Valley
14-kilometer lush gorge with Melendiz River and rock-hewn early Christian basilicas
Overview & Geological Significance
A green oasis amidst the arid Anatolian plateau. The 100-meter deep canyon was carved by the Melendiz River, sheltering over 105 cave chapels and riverside tea stations.
Historical & Cultural Context
Formed by tectonic fractures and erosion caused by the volcanic eruptions of Mount Hasan. Early Christians used its deep secluded banks as monastic sanctuaries.
“Entering from the official main gate involves descending nearly 380 wooden stairs into the canyon. A smart, relaxed itinerary is to walk the shaded 3.5 km riverside path toward Belisırma village, visit Ağaçaltı and Yılanlı cave churches along the way, and conclude with a fresh river-trout lunch on the floating wooden platforms directly over the Melendiz River.”
