Kaymaklı Underground City
Eight-level subterranean refuge labyrinth carved deep into Cappadocia volcanic bedrock
Overview & Geological Significance
Connected by intricate low-ceiling tunnels, ventilation shafts, communal kitchens, wineries, and stables, Kaymaklı could shelter thousands of inhabitants and livestock during Arab-Byzantine sieges.
Historical & Cultural Context
Initially carved by ancient Phrygians in the 8th–7th centuries BC, the city was extensively expanded during the Byzantine period to survive Persian and Umayyad invasions.
“On Level 2, pause at the circular church with double apses and a baptismal basin carved into the solid rock floor. The blue arrows guide descent while red arrows guide ascent; follow the flow to avoid head-on congestion.”
